Nevado Coropuna, peak on right is 6,425 m (21,080') high.
Nevado (snow covered) Coropuna is a remnant caldera from a once active volcano.


Base camp: dusty, summer every day, winter every night.


Automatic weather station set up at base camp for testing and calibration while I acclimatized to 16,400' altitude... some headaches and nausea.


We ascended and descended this Martian landscape repeatedly to get fit for altitude.


Some local experience from Benjamin was vital for successful field work.


Further up, we are near camp 2, the 'moraine camp'.


At Moraine Camp (5517 m, 18,100'), flat spots were hard to find.


...beginning the hike from the ice edge to a saddle between two peaks.


Minute differences in melt from dirty surfaces versus clean surfaces amplify into a rough surface covered in 'penitents'.
