Nevado Coropuna, peak on right
is 6,425 m (21,080') high.
Nevado (snow covered) Coropuna
is a remnant caldera from a once active volcano.
Base camp: dusty, summer every
day, winter every night.
Automatic weather station set up
at base camp for testing and calibration while I acclimatized to 16,400'
altitude... some headaches and nausea.
We ascended and descended this
Martian landscape repeatedly to get fit for altitude.
Some local experience from Benjamin
was vital for successful field work.
Further up, we are near camp 2,
the 'moraine camp'.
At Moraine Camp (5517 m, 18,100'),
flat spots were hard to find.
